Lafayette Style Watch: The Shift Dress

This week Aleni takes a look at the shift dress. Where did this style originate and why is it such a popular choice for casual dress wear?

Lafayette College students lead busy lives. With work piling up during the week before fall break, it can seem like a challenge simply choosing an outfit to wear to class. Throwing on a simple shift dress might solve this problem for you. It is a way to look casually chic. The shift dress, which started in the 1920s, is a flow-y dress now shown with several sleeve lengths. It is usually high necked, with no specific shape to it, allowing designers the chance to play around with texture, pattern, and color. Famous women such as Lilly Pulitzer and Audrey Hepburn made the shift dress popular. With a staple shift dress in your closet, you can have fun accessorizing differently each time you wear it.

Each week Lafayette Style columnist, Aleni Mackarey peruses the campus to find Leopard’s rocking unique and individual trends! Today’s installment features Olivia Andersen in a fashionable black shift. Let’s take a look.

What is your class year and major?

Sophomore, double major in english and philosophy.

Where is your look from?

My dress is free people, my tights are from target, my boots are Steve Madden, my headband is from anthropology and my bag is Sorial!

What was your attitude while sporting today’s casual version of a little black dress?

Comfy and stylish.

What was the inspiration behind the accessories you paired with this shift?

The headband with a bow brought out some feminine flare and my metallic silver bag brightened up all of the black I’m wearing.

To what sorts of events or places might you wear this outfit?

Class or lunch and swap the boots for heels and it can be dressed up for dinner. So pretty much anywhere.

Explain your color choices.

I love black because it matches with everything and now that it’s fall I can pair my olive boots to brighten the dark colors and my flashy bag to keep it fun.

What is your favorite fashion trick/tip?

I like to wear my semi-dry hair in a ballerina bun to create curls for the next day without any heat tools!

Who is a fashion icon of yours? And why?

Cheesy but, my mom. She always looks stunning and appropriate for the occasion.

Of the celebrity outfits you’ve seen, which is one of your favorites?

I pretty much love everything that Catherine Lowe — winner of Sean’s bachelor season — wears.
