Power outage scheduled during fall break

An outage affecting many buildings on campus will occur this weekend

A power outage will take place next Sunday over Fall Break so work can be performed on one of the transformers that provides energy to campus.

The power outage will take place from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Buildings that will be affected by this outage include several dorms, such as Ruef and Easton, as well as many academic buildings, including Van Wickle Hall, Kirby Hall of Civil Rights, and the Simon Center for Economics.

A problem developed with one of two 2400 V transformers, according to Director of Plant Operations Bruce Ferretti, and a replacement needs to be installed. Although the replacement transformer was ordered months ago, Plant Operations had trouble finding an opportune time to complete the task.

“Our challenge was to find a time period when the load on the transformers was low enough to permit us to take the damaged transformer out of service while weather conditions still support outside work,” Ferretti said.

After the transformer is replaced this weekend, Plant Operations will then take the next month to begin working on the foundation where the transformer was installed.

Another outage will need to take place this semester before winter conditions begin in order to connect the transformer back into the system, Ferretti said.

The outage has yet to be scheduled, but will most likely occur during Thanksgiving vacation as long as there is sufficient progress on the foundation between the replacement and the holiday.

These power outages are separate from the only routinely and annually scheduled outage of the year, which happens the second Sunday in August, according to Ferretti. During those times, Plant Operations conducts preventative maintenance on electrical equipment.
