Fashion Watch: Spring fashion trends

Here’s what you should be wearing come warmer weather

While it appears almost surreal, the snow has finally melted, and with it, so have our layers of scarves and sweaters and winter coats. As the college anticipates sunshine and warmth, here are trends you should closet this spring.

It’s out with the old, and in with the flowers, apparently. The streets have started to be frequented by roomy distressed denim and bohemian patterns. Flower power is back, and edgier than ever.

Fear not, for the love child is not the only trend that never goes out of style. As in Taylor Swift’s hit single, “Style,” the dreamy look of James Dean is still very much vogue and it’s not just a look limited to men. And speaking of motorcycles and bad boys, leather is back this spring.

In addition, Erika Van Acken ‘15 claims that “from what I’ve seen of the pictures of NY Fashion week, there will be lots of gingham prints.” Turns out our previously granola-regarded, L.L. Bean inspired, cozy shirts are at the front of the line this season. As are gingham patterned dresses and shorts, too.

One can also never fail with simplicity.

“The best spring fashion trends, or just fashion trends in general, are black and white: man buns, and birkenstocks,” Jess Lewry ‘17 said.

If you’re wondering what to put on in the morning—here are a few clothing articles to stock up on this spring.

“Rompers, long sleeve crop-tops, and backless dresses” are your go-tos for the spring season Olivia Hadley ’16 said. Alongside her picks, some of the frequently spotted runway trends include simple, sporty items such as sneakers and casual stripes.

As for the boys, the fashion has stayed relatively the same from last spring. But hey, no one’s complaining. Stephen Lipton ‘17 stays true to the college boy chic.

“I hear it’s cool to wear basketball jerseys and timbs,” he said.

And for those awaiting the epitome of the collegiate prepster, freshman Alex Battisti said,“I think for guys, as has been the case for awhile, pastel colors will be a common sight on campus.”

So, if you enjoy beards and beanies or if you aim for a preppier look, this spring promises to give everyone just a little bit of everything. Be edgy, be hip, be sporty, be preppy, but seriously, down coats are so last season.
