Lehigh advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division I-AA FCSplayoffs with a 40-38 win over Towson University and will take on North Dakota State tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
North Dakota State, the second seed in the tournament, will host the game in the rowdy Fargodome, seating almost 20,000. Lafayette lost to North Dakota State in the Fargodome 42-6 in the season-opener.
Following Lehigh Football’s victory over Towson, receiver RyanSpadola ‘13 included a racial expletive on his twitter account. According to Lehighsports.com, Spadola quoted an “an inappropriate reference” messaged to him by a former high school teammate.
“The use of this racially insensitive characterization is unacceptable and inconsistent with the values and expectations of our Lehigh community and football program,” Lehigh Head Coach Andy Coen said on Lehighsports.com. “While the inappropriate language did not originate with our student-athlete, when he reused the words, he made them his.”
After the game, Coen said he did not believe this warranted a suspension, according to The Baltimore Sun.
Spadola had 116 receiving yards in the 37-13 win over Lafayette and 152 yards in the victory over Towson. He was named to the FCS All-America team on Wednesday, after collecting 96 receptions, 1,614 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season.
“On Thursday afternoon, the NCAA suspended Ryan Spadola for Saturday’s Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinal at North Dakota State University.”
