Quotas not met after the fall

Four out of Lafayette’s six sororities are recruiting new members this spring. Delta Gamma, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta DeltaDelta and Pi Beta Phi are recruiting members to meet their quotas.

Every semester the Panhellenic Council, an umbrella organization for 26 international women’s fraternities and sororities, notifies chapters on whether they are above or below the campus total for members, according to emails from Vice President of Membership for DG Lindsay Thomas ’17 and Membership Chairman for Kappa Lauren Matrale ’17.

If sororities are below the quota, they can participate in recruitment.

According to former president of Tri Delta Audrey Peterson ’16,that quota is based on how many sisters the sorority already has and whether the sorority reached their quota in the fall.

Pi Phi, Kappa and Tri Delta have been holding scheduled events since Feb. 1 including cookie decorating, a pizza party and a hot chocolate and movie night, according to a calendar on the Lafayette College PanHellenic website. The events will continue for these sororities until Feb. 12.

DG events are not on the calendar but the sorority is recruiting this spring as well, Thomas said.

According to Peterson, the four sororities are all hosting events on different nights over the next two weeks because they each want to give prospective members the opportunity to try out Greek life. Spring events are open to all eligible sophomore and junior women that want to attend.

According to emails from each of the four recruiting sororities, spring recruitment is significantly more relaxed and less structured than fall recruitment.

Fall recruitment is broken up into structured nights, including “friendship night,” “house tours and philanthropy night” and “preference night,” according to the Potential New Member Handbook from the Lafayette PanHellenic Council.In the spring, though, each sorority can decide personally what events they want to hold, Peterson said.

Both AGD and APhi are above their quotas, so they are not eligible to recruit, according emails from AGD member Ally Simels ‘16 and APhi member Caitlyn Cap ‘17.
