Sophomore quarterback Zach Zweizig’s father, Jonathan, passed away on Sunday due to complications from a stroke he suffered on Thursday, November 8. He was 56.
Instead of immediately heading home, Zweizig opted to remain with the team and travel to Fordham University for Saturday’s game. Zweizig started the game, completing 22 of 35 passes for 285 yards and one touchdown pass. But Lafayette’s effort was not enough as the team fell 36-27.
Lafayette officials offered him a release for personal reasons, but Zweizig traveled back to Easton, completed an academic obligation on Sunday, and eventually headed home to West Lawn, Pa.
“He’s just a tremendous young man, very tough mentally, physically, and obviously emotionally,” Coach Frank Tavanisaid. “I suspect he’ll come and go about business as usual. He’s determined to come and he’s determined to win.”
Zweizig will start the final game of the season on Saturday, the 148th meeting between Lafayette and rival Lehigh at Fisher Stadium at 1 p.m.
