The college’s annual day of service, Lafapalooza, is this weekend and students, staff and faculty are invited.

This year, the theme of Lafapalooza honors the words Amanda Miner ‘18, who passed away earlier this semester, lived by: “We are all a work in progress.”

Lafapalooza, hosted by the Center for Community Engagement and the Landis Center, is scheduled to run from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday. Students can volunteer for a variety of projects with multiple shifts. The work ranges from beautification projects to cleanups and mural painting.

Students may choose to participate in a cleanup of the Karl Stirner Arts Trail, a Bushkill Creek cleanup, several gardening projects, Healthy Kids Day at local YMCAs, volunteering at the Easton Area Community Center or mural painting at Safe Harbor. Other projects include facilitating a drum circle at the Boys and Girls Club or helping prepare arts and crafts at the Nurture Nature Center in Easton.

Lafapalooza coincides with the city-wide clean up of Easton, which occurs every year on the last Saturday of April. Several organizations in Easton are partnering with the college including West Ward Neighborhood Partnership, ProJeCt of Easton Inc., Easton Community Gardens, Easton Urban Farm and Spring Garden Early Learning Center, Easton Main Street Initiative and College Hill Neighborhood Association.

“We’re getting out into the community right here in walking distance, which I think will be nice,” Event Coordinator for Lafapalooza Nicole Maksymiw ’18 said. “We’re here but there’s kind of a divide between the neighborhood and the college, so it will be nice to get out into the neighborhood and help out.”

According to Maksymiw, students have already roughly about 150 positions. This year, there is an especially large number of projects, Maksymiw said.

There will be a special service project for Miner’s friends and family at Third Street Alliance, where Miner volunteered. According to Maksymiw, Miner was involved in the Landis Center’s Alternative School Break program (ASB) and had gone on an ASB trip last year. Miner also volunteered in one of the weekly MOSAIC programs at Third Street Alliance, which is where a painting project will be held during Lafapalooza.

Lafapalooza honors the phrase “We are all a work in progress” in various forms. Participants will receive a free, reusable water with these words printed on it.

“I know that we’re really glad that we have this opportunity and are able to do this in memory of Amanda,” Maksymiw said. “I don’t know of a better way to honor her memory.”

The Landis Center also co-sponsors Make a Difference Day in the fall, an event similar to Lafapalooza. Maksymiw said Make a Difference Day serves as a time to close down the gardens and put them to bed for winter.
