All is well with the Lafayette women’s volleyball team these days. Winners of its last six matches, five of them in straight sets, Patriot League play cannot come soon enough.

“As we’ve progressed through the season we’ve continued to get better,” head coach Terri Dadio Campbell said. “We limited our mistakes and our offense continues to improve.”

The new Kirby Sports Complex was unveiled this weekend and proved to be a difficult place for teams to play. Domination ensued as Lafayette beat Wright State, Farleigh Dickinson, St.Peter’s, and St. Francis, all in straight sets.

“It’s a beautiful place to play and brought some new energy to the girls,” Campbell said.

This weekend was the coming out party for freshman Samantha Volk – the winner of the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Week award. The talented setter tallied a total 85 assists the three contests. Despite the responsibility of leading the offense, Volk has handled herself with the poise of an upperclassman.

“Samantha has done a great job leading our offense, distributing the ball to our hitters, and utilizing her strong serve,” Campbell said.

With another three matches at home this weekend, the goal is to keep moving in the right direction. Amongst the early success, the team acknowledges that the real test waits when Patriot League play opens on September 18th at Lehigh.

Last season ended with nine straight losses and Volk and her teammates are well aware of that and prepared to use it as motivation to have a strong finish this year.

“I think we mesh well,” Volk said. “There’s a lot I can get better at and I know there’s a lot this team can get better at.”
