Sky’s out, thighs out: Lafayette gets ready for Spring

Just as students reluctantly adapted to this year’s cold and dismal winter, forecasts began to change with temperatures recorded as high as 58 degrees Fahrenheit just a few days ago.

With the coming of pleasant, mild weather, the grays of this winter’s frost will be replenished with lush greens. The Quad is no longer a labyrinth of pathways amongst the snow, and Adirondack chairs will make their appearance before we go on spring break

Putting away the winter sweaters, scarves, hats, and other tedious layers, students are eager to return from break with flip flops, colorful dresses, and “short inseams,” David Gannon ‘16 said.

Aside from the new spring collection at J.Crew, here are a few events that we all can look forward to this spring.

Most highly anticipated is the resurrection of the Quad as the social heart of campus and the hub of lazy afternoons lounging on the grass

Stephen Lipton ‘17 joked, “I’m looking forward to nude sunbathing on the quad with my friends.”

Also returning are outdoor movie screenings, where students bring blankets and pillows to spend the evening hours submerged in a film under the stars.

Some are thrilled for the number of events coming to College Hill such as the Spring Concert on May 10 as well as the spring holidays. When asked what she was looking forward to this spring, Sabrina Mastronardo ‘15 said, “Easter. It’s my favorite holiday.”

It is almost surreal that the college will again enjoy sunny lunches outside Gilbert’s Cafe and Lower Farinon and venture down the no-longer-icy steps to the Farmer’s Market that will once more adorn Downtown Easton’s Center Square with Saturday morning bliss.

Some are excited for the warm and happy weather for personal reasons such as Mary McCabe ‘16 who looks forward to “rainbows, vitamin D, St. Patrick’s day and my birthday.”

“I can’t wait to go to Miami for spring break,” Sasha Seliverstova ‘17 said. “90 degree weather would be ideal.” As the second semester winds down, many will leave to brave the world beyond campus. Yet before the seniors say their goodbyes, there is still much sun to catch and many memories to be had as we put on our shades and turn up the volume.
