A Shot of Yeager: October optimism

Amelie Yeager provides some inspiring words for those of us lulling into a fall slump.

We’ve finally reached October and the semester is seriously flying by. It seems like only yesterday that I was hunched over (I mean sitting upright in a lady-like fashion) in Skillman basement writing my first column—you know, the one that’s taped to all of your ceilings so that you can stare at it every night in amazement.

We’re already more than a third of the way through the fall semester. In case you’re like me and haven’t gotten anywhere close to the things you’d hoped to accomplish this semester (i.e. having Lower transformed into a fully functional Panera Bread, getting the new International Affairs building erected in my name, etc.), then I think it’s fitting to get a little motivational inspiration going up in here.

Since I’m such a quote-lover, here are a few of my favorite words from my favorite people that put an extra little pep in my step when all I want to do is skip class all day and curl up with a nice Cosmic latte in bed.

In the wise words of Tina Fey, “Say ‘yes’ and you’ll figure it out afterwards.” This one is particularly important to me because I tend to overthink things a lot and have trouble making decisions. You should see me go grocery shopping. It takes me around an hour just to decide on whether I want Fuji apples or Honeycrisp. I need just the right amount of sweetness yet firmness of my fruit, okay? Moving on.

From Emma Stone: “There’s this Ryan Gosling quote that I steal all the time—I watched an interview with him in Cannes—and he said this: ‘There can be a lot of really great songs [on the radio] in a row, but then that one comes on that just makes you want to dance.'” I feel like this one shouldn’t really require an explanation because it has Ryan Gosling in it, but I’ll be brief: when in doubt, blast some tunes and dance away. I do this more times and in more public places than what’s probably deemed “appropriate,” but who cares.

And finally, from my personal hero and comedy inspiration, Mindy Kaling: “It’s so weird being my own role model.” I love this one because I think a lot of the times we look to other people to lift us up and keep us going, so we often overlook how incredible we, ourselves, can be. If you want to have someone to look up to in your life, why shouldn’t it be the person who stares back at you in the mirror? Act the way you want to act, be around the people you want to be around, and do the things you want to do. It’s that simple. I hope you all keep these quotes in mind as we enter a new month of the year, because we may already be almost halfway through the semester, but there’s still half left for you to accomplish great things. Make them count. Yeager out.
