The Lafayette Style Watch

This Week, Style columnist Aleni Mackarey takes on the fashion trend of printed pants. Are these faded trousers here to stay?

Denim jeans have been universally known as a closet staple. Their comfort, versatility, and ability to match with just about anything makes them one of the first things we pull off our shelves. This spring, however, the denim jeans were given a run for their money when patterned pants hit the scene. These trousers, covered in everything from stripes, sunsets, Aztec designs, animals, and florals were shown in every store and on every runway. Ranging from starchy cottons to stretchy spandex, the pants also offer several fabric options to meet everyone’s preferences. Patterned pants can be paired with anything from a contrasting patterned top, or a simple solid tee. They add just the right amount of flare to an everyday look, or, when paired with heels, a fancy event. Their flexibility appeals to many and makes designers certain they are here to stay!

Each week Lafayette Style columnist, Aleni Mackarey peruses the campus to find Leopard’s rocking unique and individual trends. Today’s installment features Julie Cantor ’17 in a pair of fashionable patterned pants. Let’s take a look.

What is your class year and major?

I’m [a] sophomore and [an] Environmental Studies major.

Where is your look from?

My pants are from American Eagle, Blank Cropped Tank is from Bloomingdales, and Sweater is from my roommate’s closet, who is awesome and super trendy.

What inspired your look for today?

I was going for comfortable chic. I love black and white together, and black clothing just in general.

What was the inspiration behind the outfit you paired with your pants?

These pants can only be paired with so many items, so I chose my plain black tank immediately. The sweater was a bold choice because of its length but ended up putting the whole outfit together. I actually didn’t put too much thought into this outfit, but it worked out seamlessly.

To what sorts of events or places might you wear this outfit?

I would wear this out to lunch with friends or a fall day in New York City.

What is your favorite fashion trick/trip?

Go with your how you feel when you wake up. If you’re feeling creative, pick out two items you wouldn’t normally pair together and try it out. Who knows, you might just find a new favorite outfit.

Who is a fashion icon of yours? And why?

My fashion icon would have to be Bethany Valentine, a fellow Alpha Phi sophomore who has an awesome fashion blog called Buzz from the B.

Of the celebrity outfits you’ve seen, which is one of your favorites?

I love when celebrities can pull off the boyfriend jean with a white short sleeve and maybe a pair of cute flats or open-toed booty wedges. The look is so cool and comfortable.

How might you transition this outfit from day to night?

To transition this outfit from day to night, I would exchange my sandals for heeled black boots and trade the white sweater in for a long black one.
