StuGov introduces new springtime event

The Quad will be bumping, the music will be pumping, and the ladies and gents will be dressed mighty fine. This Saturday, Lafayette is holding the first inaugural Derby Day.
What is Derby Day all about? “As representatives of the student body, we came to realize the importance of raising our college’s sense of camaraderie and unity,” student government representative Ricky Lanzilotti ‘16 said. “There’s no better way to do that through the excitement of establishing a new school-wide tradition.”
Modeled after the Kentucky Derby, the tradition has been a favorite among many Southern colleges. Student Government has planned various group activities, including croquet, bocce ball, badminton, and corn hole to fill the day. Other excitements in store include a photo booth, free food, and various giveaways. Live music will compliment the event with performances by the Pep Band, Cadence, the Chorduroys, Soulfege, and Carlos Barata ‘14. WJRH will be playing music throughout the event as well.
“I have a dream, now hear me out, a beautiful dream…of our student body coming together on this sunny spring afternoon,” Lanzilotti said. “No agendas, no worries, just an all around good time spent kicking back and having fun.”
The campus is buzzing and everyone has a different reason to be excited.
“I’m excited to make a grand appearance in my incredibly classy attire on the Quad,” Dan Dzhurayev ‘17 said. Although the event encourages spiffy spring attire, there is no official dress code.
“I’m hoping someone will challenge me to a 1 v. 1 tournament of badminton, but I figure most casuals out there will be terrified of my fury and adept skills,” Eugene Chung ‘15 said.
The occasion, held tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Quad, will provide attendees a sweet taste of spring before the bustle from final exams sets in. So come one, come all—unlike the Kentucky Derby, there’s nothing here to lose. Be sure to bring along your school I.D., good for one piece of merchandise and a Lafayette Derby Day Cup.
