The Lafayette women’s soccer team (4-9) suffered another difficult loss when they lost 2-1 against Holy Cross (6-7-1) last Sunday. Lafayette has now lost four straight games and is 1-3 in Patriot League play with three games left to play.
Holy Cross scored an unassisted goal in the 11th minute of the game to start the scoring. And then 57 minutes later, they scored the eventual game winner. By the time Lafayette responded in the 86thminute, it was too little too late, as Alyssa Finelli ‘15 capitalized on an assist from Laura Zito ‘15 to put Lafayette on the scoreboard.
With little time left, Lafayette was unable to score the equalizer.
“We just could not mesh well until the second half,” Goalkeeper Lauren Smedley ‘13 said. Smedley finished the game with seven saves and now has 69 this season.
“For the past two years, we have struggled as a team to have the determination at away games that we have on our own turf,” Finellisaid.
Lafayette is seventh out of eight teams in the Patriot League standings. But with matchups left against Colgate, Bucknell, and Army, the team still holds hope.
“We’ve had a rough couple of games,” Kelly Sposato ‘14 said. “It’s still possible for everything to change.”
The good news is that the three remaining games are at home, a place Lafayette has thrived all season. In five home games, Lafayette is 3-1-1.
“We need every single one of us to leave it all on the field,” Finellisaid. “We have the talent to win these games and make the playoffs.”
And it starts tonight against Colgate.
“We know that time is dwindling,” Smedley said. “We are not ready to call it the end.”
Game time is set for 7 p.m. If they win tonight, their game against Bucknell on Sunday becomes that much more interesting.
