They’re down, but not out. The women’s lacrosse team fell last weekend 15-11 to American in their last home contest of the 2013 season. While a win would have secured them a spot in the Patriot League Tournament, they still have another chance this Saturday against Colgate. Whoever wins that game will slide into the tournament as the fourth seed.
The Leopards came out firing on all cylinders, cruising to an early 6-1 lead. They then made the fatal error of relaxing and allowing American back into the mix. Their six early points were the only they scored in the first half, and American made a comeback to make the score 6-4 going into halftime. Lafayette was outscored 11-5 in the second half.
“I think we came out the strongest we ever had and then started to relax once we went up 6-1,” captain Cammie Linville ‘13 said. “They capitalized on our mistakes and we didn’t focus on the small details that would’ve maintained our lead.”
The offensive attack was led by Addie Godfrey ‘13 with four goals and Ana White ‘14 with three goals. Laura Kleiber‘14 added two and seniors Jess Rothstein and Katie Leto added one apiece.
Lafayette and American had the same amount of shots on goal and saves, 23 and five, respectively. Meghan Curtin ‘14 spent the full sixty minutes in goal.
While it was a tough loss, the Leopards are looking ahead. The memory of missing out on the tournament by one game in still fresh in the mind of everyone who was a part of the 2012 squad, and they have every intention of a happier ending in this season.
“We are very focused on Colgate as a team and have been concentrating on fixing the mistakes we made Saturday,”Linville continued. “Going to the Patriot League Tournament would mean everything for the senior class. After such a hard first two years here and coming so close last year, it would be especially fulfilling. It has always been a goal of ours and since this is our last opportunity to make the tournament we are going to do everything we can to get there.”
Lafayette fell 19-10 Wednesday night to Penn State in their last non-conference matchup on the Nittany Lions’ home turf.
Lafayette now stands at 8-8 on the season and 2-3 in the Patriot League.
