Shortly before 9 p.m. on Monday, February 6, a male student in McKeen Hall reported a swastika drawn on the message board of his door, but declined further criminal investigation. This act of ethnic intimidation is a reminder of last spring. Director of Public Safety Hugh Harris deemed the incident an isolated one.
According to Associate Dean and Director of Intercultural Development John McKnight, one of the occupants of the room is Jewish. Harris could not attribute a reason for the student’s decision declining an investigation.
Harris declined to send a campus-wide email regarding the incident, citing it was not a form of assault and did not pose an immediate danger to the community. McKnight sent an email to the student leaders who attended the FindingWe retreat, instructing them to engage their peers in efforts to rid the campus of such behavior.
“We need your energy and creativity as we continue to develop appropriate responses to bias related incidents and acts of ethnic intimidation,” McKnight wrote in the email.
