The fencing team headed to Johns Hopkins University on Sunday for the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association “A vs. C” meet, where it squared off against the hosts, Haverford College, the University of Maryland and the Naval Academy.
In the men’s sabre field, sophomore Jordan Ginsberg set the tone early, finishing the day with eight wins in 12 bouts. Fellow sophomore Nikita Kogan followed closely behind, earning seven victories across 13 bouts and providing steady support in the middle of the lineup. Senior Christopher Rafferty added two more wins to round out the group.
Senior epee Tyler Morse and sophomore epee Ryan Leibowitz each posted six wins across 12 bouts. Freshman epee Henry Cohen contributed three more victories.
“My own performance was a little disappointing,” Morse said. “I’ve been dealing with a few minor injuries, but overall things went pretty well.”
Freshman William Nicoll led the foil group with six wins in 12 bouts. Fellow classmates, foils Ryan Kramer and Owen Riley also earned four and two victories, respectively.
The men’s squad earned decisive wins against Navy, 16-11, and Maryland, 20-7.
“There’s usually some good competition at this meet,” Morse said. “We fared pretty well, which is a good indication that we’re going to finish the season strong.”
On the women’s side, sophomore epee Hilla Wetherhill delivered a standout performance, earning nine wins in 12 bouts. Freshman epee Helen Broikos also added three victories.
The foil squad was paced by sophomore foil Zoe Lenz, who won nine out of 14 bouts. Freshman foil Cora Davia contributed six wins as well, while junior sabre Makenna McCall recorded five victories.
Sunday’s meet comes just over a month before the team heads to NCAA Regionals on March 7.
“We want to qualify as many people as we can for NCAA Regionals,” interim head coach Jennifer Hergert said. “I really think we have a solid shot at getting at least six through this year, so that’s our focus.”
The Leopards will travel to Drew University for their last stretch of competition this season, participating in the MACFA A Round‑Robin on Feb. 21 before hitting the MACFA Championships on March 1.
“The rest of the season is definitely going to be a challenge,” Hergert said.
