The faculty dining room in Marquis Hall transformed into a five-star jazz club Monday evening for the first annual CaPACabaret.
The room featured a stage, a bar, and a personal wait staff for a sit down dinner. The Michael Pinkard Quintet was the main act, and was accompanied with music, film, flash fiction and dancing by other CaPA fellows.
This was the first time the CaPA Fellowship has hosted an event like this. Michael Pinkard ‘14, who organized and performed at the cabaret, was extremely pleased with the turnout. Sixty-eight of the seventy seats were filled.
The Michael Pinkard Quintet featured Lucas Reilly ‘13 on piano, John Paul Bisciotti ‘14 on bass, Peter Taggart ‘15 on drums, Brian Pinkard ‘16 on trumpet and Michael Pinkard ‘14 on the tenor saxophone. The band played their heart away with tunes like “Someday My Prince Will Come” by Frank Churchill and “Eternal Triangle” by Sonny Stitt.
“I definitely want to say that the guys in the band played great,” Pinkard said. “We brought a lot of energy and I think people could hear that and see that in our playing.”
“All of us play because we love it,” Pinkard continued. “We’ve been working on the music for the last couple months, so it was a lot of fun to hear it and feel it and see it really come to life.”
CaPA Fellows plan to make this an annual event. “The CaPA Fellowship is really just beginning to lay down roots on campus,” Pinkard said. “When we came up with the idea for the Cabaret I imagined it continuing long after we’ve graduated.”
Ann Lauer ‘14, who danced at the Cabaret, also hopes it will become an annual event.
“It was enjoyable experiencing different artistic skills [that were] brought together in one night, filled with jazz music, singing, dancing, readings and film showings,” Lauer said. “It was fun being a part of everyone’s talents, and something I hope that will become annual.”
If you did not make it, the CaPA Fellowship will host a Spring Show Case at the Williams Center for the Arts from April 14-28.
“We will have art in the lobby by a majority of CaPA studio art Fellows and CaPA performances on Sunday, April 21 as a double bill with Jennifer Kelly in the music department,” CaPA Fellowship Program Founding Coordinator Jim Toia said.
