Another five-goal game by Addie Godfrey ’13 paced the Lafayette Women’s Lacrosse Team to a 14-11 victory against Bucknell (3-9, 0-4) this past Saturday. Godfrey has led the offense all season and is the current Patriot League leader in goals with 45.
Other Leopards followed suit during the game. Ana White ‘14, this week’s recipient of Patriot League Midfielder of the Week, scored three goals; Jess Rothstein ‘13 and Victoria Maxon ‘13 each scored two; and Katie Mischler ‘13 and Erin Steel ‘12 netted one apiece.
Not to be outdone, goalie Meghan Curtin ‘14 has been a standout on the defensive end. Notching four saves in the Bucknell win, Curtin is ranked third in the Patriot League with a .432 save percentage. Mimi Connell ‘15 provided depth in the goal, playing 16 minutes and recording two saves.
Despite the win, the team insists the ceiling is higher. “We didn’t play to the best of our ability, but we made it work in the end and finished strong,” Godfrey said.
Lafayette (8-5, 1-2), is tied for fifth in league standings with Holy Cross (6-5, 1-2), a position they have to improve over the next four games in order to reach their ultimate goal: the Patriot League Tournament. Godfrey believes this is the year to do it. With one league win in the books, what has been a far-shot in past seasons is looking more and more attainable.
“It felt really good to get our first Patriot League win of the season,” Godfrey continued. “I think this will give us some confidence going into the next three league games and hopefully enough momentum to continue winning. Of my three years here, this is by far the best chance we’ve had at making a run at the PLT’s.”
To reach the tournament, Lafayette will have to win at least two of the remaining three Patriot League matchups against American, Colgate and Holy Cross. It only takes three Patriot League wins to be in the top four and head to the tournament.
American and Colgate are second and third in the league standings and the Leopards will undoubtedly be the underdog in each game.
“We’re all just really excited about what’s coming up,” Lindsay Yang ‘14 said. “We have very high expectations of ourselves right now, but they’re realistic. We’re more mature as a team than we have been in years. The league is open, and our desire is higher than ever. It’s a different ball game.”
Next up is tomorrow’s matchup against American in Washington D.C., where Godfrey will be shooting for her third straight five-goal game.
