Winter isn’t finished in the Lehigh Valley. A winter storm warning for the region took effect Sunday morning, with some forecasters saying the coming snowfall could surpass January’s near-foot of precipitation and possibly break records.
The National Weather Service predicted 12-18 inches of snow for the region in a Sunday morning forecast. Precipitation in Easton started as rain, but switched over to snow Sunday afternoon, with conditions expected to worsen as the day goes on, and possible blizzard conditions Sunday night.
The local weather service branch posted on X that “snowfall records are likely to be broken.”
Forecasters are also predicting that the storm will bring high winds, with gusts up to 40 mph.
Easton declared a snow emergency lasting from 3 p.m. Sunday to 3 p.m. Monday, during which parking is prohibited on specific “Snow Emergency Routes” designated by the city. Impacted streets include McCartney or Cattell Streets.
In-person classes at Lafayette College on Monday remain up to the discretion of the professor, barring further announcement from the school.
The approaching storm comes on the heels of a mid-January system that dropped nearly a foot of snow on Easton and remained on the ground for weeks of subfreezing weather. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing later in the week.
