Student Government unanimously approved a motion to purchase 30 additional outdoor chairs during its March 26 meeting. The student activities fee was also discussed, with a decision on the 2026-27 fee expected at an unknown date.
The chairs will join roughly 70 other Adirondack chairs scattered around campus, with the majority of the new additions to be placed on the Quad. President Allie Waxman ‘28 noted a perceived shortage of chairs and a student infrastructure project as major factors while introducing the motion.
Treasurer Gracie Vale ‘27 confirmed funding for the chairs will come from a reserve fund established during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which students paid the activity fee despite a lack of programming.
Vale did not provide specifics on the chair cost when asked, saying the number would become available after the purchase. Student Government approved a separate motion to purchase 20 Adirondack chairs for $6,760 last April.
Vale also presented a breakdown of the student activities fee, currently a $360 subcharge of tuition. She estimated that last year’s fee amounted to $1,008,000, with a fifth of the funding going to Student Involvement and $6,400 to the student New York Times subscription. Campus-approved clubs were then funded with the remaining $800,000.
Vale and Sen. Will Bennett ‘28 added that a campus-wide Canva subscription is in the early stages of consideration. Bennett added that the activity fee would not increase by more than $10 if the subscription is enacted.
Parliamentarian Amy Atuhaire ‘29 also led a workshop on drafting bills under Student Government’s newly approved constitutional system.
Budget allocations were deliberated and approved in secret, a practice Student Government deems a fairness measure. Of the $812 requested, $3,267.52 was allocated; the discrepancy between the two numbers was due to the club budget appeal process, where rejected requests can be reconsidered.
