The Lafayette men’s soccer team has been dominant defensively, allowing just four goals in its six games this fall. However, scoring has been in a drought as the Leopards have managed only five goals thus far. Those two combinations have resulted in a 1-0-5 record, which head coach Dennis Bohn views positively.

“We are one of only three teams in the country that has played six games and is undefeated,” Bohn said. “We want to turn those ties into wins but we are excited about being undefeated and staying undefeated.”

Two of Lafayette’s five ties came last weekend on the road against Ivy League adversaries Dartmouth and Harvard.

Against Harvard on Sunday in Cambridge, Ma., Peter Adubato ‘14, Tom McCutcheon ‘15, Jeff McLaughlin ‘14 and Greg Biggiani ‘16 all had shots on goal to no avail. Against Dartmouth last Friday, Lafayette took six shots on goal, three by Biggiani, none of which resulted in tallies.

The team’s offensive productivity has without a doubt lagged at times, but when Bohn looks at his offense, he does not see a problem. Instead, he sees an attack that is substantially better than the stat sheet might indicate.

“There is no panic about our offensive efficiency,” Bohn said. “We are creating chances and I have total confidence in our players. We are going to score goals and be a productive offense.”

The opportunities have been there. Lafayette has launched 37 corner kicks to lead the Patriot League. It is the number of shots that is lagging. The team is ranked second lowest in the conference in shots per game with 10.5, ahead of Holy Cross. In 2012, Lafayette managed 12.4 shots per game.

Bohn remains optimistic that his offense will reach its potential.

“We are creating a large amount of opportunities every game. As a team we just need to continue working hard to create goal-scoring chances and I am confident that the goals are coming.”

Defense has been nothing short of masterful led by goalkeeper Nathan McDonald ‘14, who boasts a .56 goals-against average. The defense ranks second only to Army.

“Our back four defenders and [Nate] have been very consistent,” Bohn said. “They have been focused and sharp throughout the entire season.”

Bohn has preached defense each year of his 13-year tenure in Easton and his squad has embraced that mentality.

“We are defending at a very high level,” Bohn said. “Everyone is committed to not giving up goals in all situations. Our players are taking great pride in defending and it is resulting in shutouts.”

Now Bohn and Lafayette must hope for goals. Play continues tomorrow when they face the Binghamton Bearcats at 2 p.m. in Easton.
