Before we dismissed for break, I was asked by an international student what Thanksgiving was about. It was a terrifying experience. Now, to be clear, I’m very confident in my knowledge of this great American holiday – I’ve drawn many hand turkeys throughout my life so I’m basically an expert on the subject. Yet realizing how weird this tradition must seem to someone who hasn’t grown up with it, I became super flustered and was only able to get out a few words about Pilgrims and Indians (sorry every elementary school teacher I’ve ever had). However, now that I’ve had time to reflect on my own, I’ve come to the conclusion that Thanksgiving is much more than a single meal our ancestors had centuries ago with a people they would eventually kill with measel-laiden blankets. Thanksgiving is a time to look at how fortunate we are and appreciate life and those we share it with. Thus I’ve compiled the top ten things I was thankful for this Thanksgiving:
1. Beating Lehigh
2. Wifi
3. Amazon (both the website and rainforest)
4. The term “Twerksgiving”**
5. All the different ways you can cook potatoes
6. Fuzzy Socks
7. Bad Thanksgivukkah puns
8. Nobody I knew was injured in the events of Black Friday 2013 (thank you based god)
9. Wolfram Alpha
10. It’s officially the appropriate season to listen to Michael Buble Christmas music in a public setting
**Let’s be clear. I hate the term “Twerksgiving” with every living part of my body. I am thankful in that it helped me identify which of my friends are terrible people based on whether or not they used it.
