Student Government’s Oct. 10 meeting saw budget approvals, a new ad hoc committee for elections and Fall Fest announcements.
After the minutes from the previous meeting were approved, Treasurer Christo Maheras ‘26 presented the new budget approvals. Clubs that requested funding included the Chordoroys, Arts Society, Out in STEM, club tennis, Hillel Society, The Lafayette and English Club. All were approved, with several organizations receiving less funding than initially requested.
Later, President Thania Hernandez ‘25 appointed an ad hoc committee to oversee the next Student Government election. Three positions are open to the general student body: communications officer, inclusivity officer and parliamentarian. The positions of president, vice president and treasurer are only available to current Student Government members.
Hernandez also spoke about filling a vacancy for the class of 2027. Shanza Asif ’27 resigned due to personal reasons, adding to the existing two vacancies for class of 2026 representatives. Applications for both class representatives are open.
Vice President Yuko Tanaka ‘26 presented an update on Fall Fest, Lafayette College’s annual fall festival that this year, has been combined with Family Weekend and Homecoming. The event is scheduled for the afternoon of Oct. 26.
Members then participated in an activity to define the purpose and goals of Student Government. After a temporary interruption to observe the northern lights, the meeting reached the open floor and was soon adjourned.
The Oct. 17 meeting included budget approvals, committee reports and an update on elections.
Budget approvals were announced by class of 2027 representative Bryan Kibet ‘27. Thirteen clubs and organizations required funding approval, all for food. This also included a reallocation of funding to the Lafayette Food and Farm Co-Operative.
The budgets were approved with organizations receiving less funding than initially requested.
Committee reports were next on the agenda, where the Academic Affairs committee discussed contacting Provost Laura McGrane about removing classes that had not been offered in the past five years from the college website. The committee also spoke about its progress on the textbook donation program.
The Sustainability Committee was unable to meet due to fall break, but planned to table on Oct. 25, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. to distribute hot chocolate in Anderson Courtyard for the Sustainable Punch Card program.
Additionally, Hernandez reported that Student Government is meeting with Lafayette Dining Services to address high catering prices.
