The swimming and diving team garnered mixed results in a quad meet against Navy, American University and host Bucknell University on Saturday.
The women’s team dropped all three meets against its opponents with final scores of 222-73 against Navy and 234-66 against Bucknell. The team just barely lost to American with a 151-148 loss.
The score margin with American was “pretty good” for the women’s team, according to junior Isabella Van Ess, who placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.68) and sixth in the 100-yard IM (1:02.37).
Van Ess said that she was “very surprised” by the former placement but that she was “hoping for a swim like that.”
The women’s team placed sixth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:50.91). Senior Maggie Ivie also placed sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (59:01), junior Emma Luttrell ninth in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:04.96) and sophomore Caroline Schenck seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.99).
On the diving board, senior Shaylee Daniels notched a fourth-place finish in the 1-meter (230.95).
Daniels acknowledged that her dives had “a lot of room for improvement” but that she “had a couple of solid dives that definitely put me ahead, so that was really exciting.”
She emphasized the importance of competing at Bucknell, this year’s Patriot League championship hosts, especially for diving to familiarize herself with the boards and environment.
Daniels was followed by sophomore Mia Guster at seventh (213.90), who also scored sixth in the 3-meter dive (235.80).
The men’s team bested American 185-112, but also yielded 185-104 and 238-62 to Navy and Bucknell, respectively.
“We always look to beat American because they’re one of the teams we’re usually battling it out with our championships,” said senior Peter Kawash, who scored third in the 100-yard IM (53.07).
Senior Avery LeTourneau earned second in the 100-yard butterfly (51.78).
“It wasn’t the greatest meet I’ve ever had, but it wasn’t terrible either, so I’m content with it,” LeTourneau said.
Sophomore Alex Zoldan placed eighth in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:50.98) and junior Tommy Weber placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.13). Senior Tommy Krystkiewicz landed sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (53.28).
For men’s diving, sophomore Landon Orth landed fourth in the 1-meter dive (256.60) and fifth in the 3-meter dive (258.55).
The Leopards’ next competition will make waves as both Senior Day and the last home meet of the season overlap in a meet against Lehigh to kick off Rivalry Weekend.
“Lehigh is always a good meet,” Daniels said. “There’s always a lot of competition, especially on the women’s diving side.”
“I’m hoping a lot of people show out,” Kawash said. “It should be a really fun time.”
