When Stuart Umberger resigned his position as Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life this past June, the Greek community was caught off guard.
“I definitely didn’t see that coming,” one fraternity member, who wished to remain unnamed, said.
Umberger had served in that capacity since July of 2011.
Very little is known about the reasons for his resignation, which was sudden and unexpected by members of the general Lafayette populace.
“The College does not comment on specifics of personnel matters,” Vice President for Campus Life Dr. Annette Diorio said in June via email. “I certainly wish Stuart all the best in his future and am appreciative of the time that he devoted to our students.”
President Alison Byerly also could not comment extensively. She took office July 1, some time after Umberger turned in his resignation.
“That preceded my arrival here,” the president said in an interview. “My sense is that was just a transition in his career.”
Umberger’s impact is still being felt during rush. Ayala has been largely carrying over changes in sorority rushing that were implemented by Umberger prior to his departure.
An upperclassman sorority member who wished to remain anonymous commented on the policies that were carried over.
“We can’t chat every day anymore, so we’re allowed to chant for the first two nights, and after the first two nights not allowed to sing at all,” she said.
She also commented on the apparent initial differences between Ayala and Umberger.
“To be honest a lot of changes were from Stuart [Umberger] and Dan [Ayala] was following through with them,” she said. “But I will say I felt like there was more presence from Dan. He came to the house every day before the events started to check in with us.”
Numerous attempts to reach Umberger were unsuccessful. He has since taken up a position at Franklin & Marshall College as the Interim Director of Fraternity and Sorority.
