Aubrey Baumbach, the member of Lafayette’s crew team who was the victim of a hit-and-run last November, successfully underwent a brain surgery that could lead to “significant improvements” in her condition, according to a Facebook post by her mother last week.
Baumbach is recovering in Brigham & Woman’s Hospital in Boston, where the surgery was performed. The family said they are optimistic about her recovery, but understand that it will be a long and arduous process.
“As one can imagine, we are extremely excited and hopeful at the prospects of the long term effects of this procedure,” Lisa Baumbach wrote in a post in the Facebook group “Aubrey’s Odyssey.” “We realize these changes will not occur overnight so we hang onto the hope and look forward to the advancement that this procedure can bring and the continued progress that does lie ahead for her.”
“As Aubrey recovers from this surgery, we wait in great anticipation of the great progress that is ahead for her,” she continued. “Everyday brings us closer to regaining Aubrey’s health and returning her to the ones who love her so very much and are longing to have her back.”
Aubrey’s parents also recognize the improvements she has already made.
“Four months ago, Aubrey underwent a surgical procedure to relieve the pressure that was building on her brain due to the trauma that her head sustained from the accident,” Aubrey’s mother said. “The procedure was successful; the swelling continued, now free from restriction, for weeks. Months later, as the swelling subsided, the healing process was allowed to begin.
“During this period we have seen positive improvements but realize that a considerable amount of time is necessary for continued healing and repair to take place. We know she will continue to improve with time. We also know that there will months of continued hard work and perseverance for Aubrey as she forges ahead,” she added.
Her parents also thanked everyone in the group for their support of Aubrey and the Baumbach family as a whole.
“We felt it important to share the excitement and hope that this new prospect brings because you have joined Aubrey on her odyssey with unparalleled love and support,” Baumbach said. “Your gestures, encouragement, comforting messages, and powerful belief in Aubrey’s recovery, have been a tower of strength for our entire family.”
While Aubrey continues to recover, the man accused of her hit-and-run on Lehigh Drive in Easton is facing trial.
According to The Express-Times, Wilson David Kneebone, 49, of Martins Creek, Pa. appeared before District Judge Antonia Grifo on Tuesday, waiving his right to a preliminary hearing on the charges against him, which include being involved in an accident causing injury, driving without proper licensing, aggravated assault by vehicle, and driving with a suspended license. In doing so, he indicated he understands this case may be sent to Northampton County Court, due to an adequate amount of evidence. He now faces criminal proceeding on the charges.
The attorney representing Kneebone, Susan Hutnik, said he is concerned about Baumbach’s condition, The Express-Times report said.
Meanwhile, Baumbach’s parents ask for the support of all those in the Facebook group as her state continues to improve.
“Please continue to keep Aubs in your thoughts and prayers as she continues along her healing process. Thank you so very much,” her mother said.
