The Lafayette (0-0 Patriot League, 0-0 overall) will take on the Brown and White (0-0 Patriot League, 0-0 overall) in a flag football rivalry contest behind the bleachers of Fisher Stadium at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
The supposedly annual event is taking place for the first time in quite a while, as the Brown and White failed to show up to the previously scheduled contest in 2021.
Junior Selma O’Malley has taken the reins as team captain, attributing the position to her two-year playing career in a youth flag football league.
“I’ve never seen such a dedicated group of people to the competition, to the time-honored tradition that is flag football,” O’Malley said.
Senior golfer Grace Sanborn and sophomore fencer Makenna McCall are taking on the responsibilities of the only Division I athletes rostered for The Lafayette, something that O’Malley downplayed.
“To remind you, I’m team captain, but I would consider them very honored advisors in my quest to bring this team to victory,” O’Malley said.
Lacking prolific arm talent to create opportunities down the field, The Lafayette will instead look for quick-designed routes and maybe even a little trickery to outwit the Brown and White.
Senior Isabella Gaglione noted that The Lafayette is quite good at “scheming,” something she hopes the team will put to use on the field.
“I’m thinking we don’t have the most talented runners or football throwers, but we do have heart and we have minds,” Gaglione said. “We just need to use that to our advantage to get around the Brown and White.”
Junior Elisabeth Seidel shared a more optimistic view than Gaglione.
“I think a lot of people know we’re the oldest college newspaper in Pennsylvania, but I don’t think they know that we’re the fastest, the strongest, the coolest, the most winningest,” Seidel said. “It’s time we set the record straight.”
The Lafayette is turning to all corners of its staff to assemble a star-studded roster.
“We’re pulling out all the stops,” Gaglione said. “We got the business team in, we got design in, maybe photos as well. Maybe not.”
Although The Lafayette does not have a scouting report on the Brown and White, or a clear idea about who will be playing what positions, the team is confident in its ability to pull out a victory.
O’Malley noted that she anticipated “blood, sweat and tears,” en route to a dominant showing on Friday.
“Yeah, just to reiterate again,” O’Malley continued. “As team captain, just to emphasize that, I really want to win.”
The Brown and White could not be reached for comment.
