Although many students were not on campus, some stayed to compete for Lafayette over Thanksgiving break. Here are all of the sporting events you may have missed.
Men’s basketball
Before the men’s basketball team (4-5 overall) hosted the inaugural Lafayette Classic, they faced the Division III opponent Rosemont College (1-6 overall) in Kirby Sports Center. The Maroon and White out-scored the Ravens with ease, winning 91-45. Freshman guard Alex Chaikin led the way with 21 points, shooting 5-of-9 from behind the arc. He was followed by senior guard TJ Berger and sophomore guard Andrew Phillips who each had 10 points apiece.
The Leopards held Rosemont to just 38.5% from the field and just 2-of-14 from 3-point range. The Maroon and White also commanded the boards, out-rebounding the Ravens 42 to 23.
Women’s basketball
The Leopards (2-6 overall) followed up a blowout loss to top-10 team Notre Dame with a matchup against formidable opponent No. 13 West Virginia (8-1 overall) on Nov. 22, making it the team’s second straight game against a ranked opponent.
Cold shooting was the theme for the Leopards in Morgantown, West Virginia, as they fell 98-28 to the host team. Senior guard Abby Antognoli led the team in points with 11, but the team as a whole shot a combined 27% from the field and 12% from the 3-point line.
The Maroon and White received a bounce-back opportunity against the New Jersey Institute of Technology (2-8), taking down the Highlanders in a nail-biting 71-69 victory. Antognoli led the team in scoring again with 20 points, followed by junior guard Kay Donahue who tallied 18 points.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with sophomore forward Tasha Chudy’s layup putting the Leopards up 60-53 with just over six minutes remaining. Although the Highlanders strung together a 10-4 run, a 3-pointer from Antognoli with 57 seconds kept the home team at bay, securing the second victory of the season for the Maroon and White.
Swimming and diving
The swimming and diving team concluded its calendar year against Lehigh University on Nov. 22 for its annual senior night and dual meet. The men fell 210-90 and the women 178-120. However, the Leopards broke multiple school and pool records.
On the women’s side, senior Shaylee Davis broke the 1-meter dive school record (267.90), junior Isabella Van Ess broke the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.72). The relay team of seniors Maggie Ivie and Sophia Toomey, sophomore Natalie Johnson and Van Ess surpassed the 200-yard medley school record (1:45.61).
Sophomore Landon Orth continued his dominance on the diving board by breaking his own 3-meter dive record (305.18), followed by senior Kurtis Campbell who established a new pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:22.54).
