Baseball (1-2)
Feb. 16
L, 4-0 @ Davidson
In the opening game, sophomore pitcher Brett Kreyer took the loss despite going five full innings and letting up only one run. The Leopards’ bats were quiet, mustering only three hits in the game.
Feb. 18
L, 2-1 @ Davidson
After the game on Feb. 17 was postponed, Lafayette took on Davidson in the first game of a doubleheader, ultimately falling in the bottom of the ninth. Lafayette tallied more hits than Davidson, but only managed to score one run, leaving runners in scoring position.
Feb. 18
W, 6-3 @ Davidson
In the second game of a doubleheader, the Leopards’ bats finally came alive, breaking things open with a three-run ninth inning. Senior first baseman Patrick Nelson paced the team with two RBIs in the game, both coming on a double in the top of the ninth.
Softball
Feb. 15
L, 10-3 @ Coastal Carolina
The Leopards started strong, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Chanticleers responded, scoring two runs in the same inning. Coastal Carolina took the lead in the second inning with four runs, and kept the lead for the rest of the game.
Feb. 15
L, 11-1 @ Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers took the lead early on, only allowing one run for the Leopards in the top of the third from freshman utility Paige Grover. Junior pitcher Stacy Gordon was credited for the loss, allowing 11 runs over four innings with four walks.
Feb. 16
L, 4-0 vs. Robert Morris
Although both teams had strong pitching performances, Robert Morris scored four runs in the second inning. Robert Morris’ home run with bases loaded was the determining play of the game.
W, 7-6 @ Rider
The Leopards earned their first 2018 win with a walk-off. Down 6-5 at the bottom of the seventh, Senior infielder Miranda Skurla made the big hit, leading to the game-tying and game-winning runs.
Feb. 18
L, 11-3 vs. Kent State
In the final round of the Battle at the Beach tournament, Kent State took a 6-0 lead in the first inning. The Leopards were unable to bounce back, only scoring three runs over the course of the game. Sophomore pitcher Alexis Randall was credited for the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.
Men’s Basketball (9-19) (7-10)
Feb. 17
W, 90-85 vs. American
Coming off one of their better shooting performances of the season, the Leopards knocked down 65% of their field goal attempts against American, including a 75% mark from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Alex Petrie led the way with a team-high 27 points, with four other Leopards notching double figures in scoring as well.
Feb. 21
L, 81-65 @ Boston University
The Leopards started off strong, taking the lead 41-36 at the end of the first half. The Terriers capitalized on the Leopards’ struggles in the second half, scoring 45 points to Lafayette’s 24 to win the game. Petrie and junior forward Paulius Zalys were the only players to score in double digits, earning 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Women’s Basketball (1o-16) (6-10)
Feb. 17
L, 74-66 @ American
The Leopards hit 55% of their shots in the first half, as Sophomore forward Alexis Santarelli notched a career-high 21 points. While they were efficient from a shooting standpoint, the Leopards gave up 25 turnovers compared to just 10 from American, and that proved to be the difference.
Feb. 21
W, 44-41 vs. Boston University
The Leopards gained a 10-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game, and continued their momentum through the end of the game. The Leopards were able to sweep the Terriers for the season, improving their Patriot League standings. Freshman guard Drew Freeland led the offense with 15 points, while freshman forward Natalie Kucowski pulled down 13 rebounds for the Leopards.
Men’s Lacrosse (2-2) (0-1)
Feb. 16
W, 8-7 (2OT) vs. Wagner
Down 7-5 with just under six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Leopards were able to notch two quick goals in order to force a first overtime. After that period went scoreless, senior midfielder Will McCarthy wasted no time in driving down the field for the game winner in the second overtime period.
Feb. 20
L, 12-9 vs. Manhattan
After falling behind 5-2 early on in the first quarter, the Leopards were able to battle back in the third, tying the game at 9-9 before entering the final frame. Once the fourth quarter arrived, the Leopards couldn’t take advantage, as Manhattan dominated possession and outscored the Leopards 3-0 in the final quarter. Junior attacker Conor Walters led the way for the Leopards in the tough loss, scoring four goals in the match.
Women’s Tennis
L, 5-2 vs. UC Irvine
Freshman Samantha Snyder was the only singles winner for the Leopards in their match with the Anteaters. The Leopards won the doubles points by default when UC Irvine forfeited doubles.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Feb. 14-17 @ Patriot League Championships
On the men’s side, junior James Grieb moved into seventh in Lafayette’s all-time top ten, swimming a time of 1:42.06 in the 200m freestyle. The 800m relay of Grieb, sophomore Bryce Currie, freshman Matt Tascione and freshman Tanner McFarland placed seventh as well. Grieb also advanced to the consolation finals with his 100m breaststroke time of 57.31.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Feb. 14-17 @ Patriot League Championships
On the women’s side, senior Allie McBrearty swam a 23.80 split in the 200m freestyle leg to place her sixth in the Lafayette’s all-time top ten in the 50 free. McBrearty’s 200m freestyle relay team placed ninth, clocking a total time of 1:37.24.
Men’s Track and Field
Feb. 17-18 @ Patriot League Championships
Dave McGriff qualified for the IC4A championship, finishing second in the weight throw with a distance of 18.59m. Senior Sam Cutrone and sophomore Tyler Hubeny made the Lafayette record books at the hepathalon. Cutrone made a score 4765, finishing fifth, and Hubeny scored 4649, finishing eighth. These were respectively the second and fourth best scores in Leopards’ record books.
Women’s Track and Field
Feb. 17-18 @ Patriot League Championships
The 4×800 relay team finished fifth with a time of 9:10.21. Consisting of junior Amy Hewlett, junior Caroline Harmon, sophomore Alexa Kwapinski and sophomore Margaret Schiazza, the team qualified for the IC4A and ECAC indoor championship. Seven Leopards left with personal bests.
