Student Government’s Oct. 3 meeting saw a proposal for a new financial guidelines ad hoc committee, progress reports from ad hoc committees and a discussion on the restructuring of all committees.
Treasurer Christo Maheras ‘26 proposed the creation of a new financial guidelines ad hoc committee, a short-term project with the goal of creating clear rules for distributing funds to Student Government committees. The presentation prompted discussion of why a separate ad hoc committee would be necessary.
Allison Williams, the Student Government advisor, questioned if the current budget committee could take over the project. Student Government President Thania Hernandez ’25 cited busy schedules and time commitments as a reason for the issue, and she and Maheras then agreed to “table this until next week.”
After a proposal to move budget requests to the end of the meeting was approved, committees reported their current progress and goals. The dining committee discussed their recent meeting with the dining administration in which the addition of more salads was a topic of conversation.
Inclusivity Officer Sasha Carter ‘27 spoke on behalf of the Pard Pantry ad hoc committee, announcing its plan to create “small but thoughtful” care packages for students unable to return home for Thanksgiving. Carter also plans to open the pantry for students staying on campus over fall break.
The general body then considered the necessity of ad hoc committees and the idea of integrating ad hoc committees into permanent committees. Those in favor of the idea argued it would allow for larger initiatives and prevent committees from being “spread too thin.”
Hernandez countered that the change would create a disproportionate number of members within each committee.
The meeting ended with a review of budget requests from three student organizations. After revising these requests, all were approved unanimously despite requests from Boxing Club and The Arts Society being marked as incorrect submissions.
