The softball team (4-30 overall, 1-11 Patriot League) lost all three games in its rivalry series against Lehigh University (27-14 overall, 12-0 Patriot League) this past weekend at Kaufman Fields.

The Leopards failed to score in the first game, which took place at noon on Saturday. The teams were scoreless in the first two innings, but the Mountain Hawks broke through in the third thanks to a three-run home run and an additional run. Senior starting pitcher Kailee Sawai went 2.2 innings and was responsible for four runs and six hits.

The Mountain Hawks scored again in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and went on to win 5-0.

The Leopards did not tally a hit in the first game, and only junior designated hitter Kaya Ciccone-Cozart reached base on a walk.

Lehigh took the second game later that day by an identical score of 5-0. The Mountain Hawks carried over their momentum from the first game, scoring three runs in the first inning. The home team’s next two runs came in the second and fourth.

The Leopards had more offensive production in the second game, notching a hit in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings. However, they could not string together multiple hits or drive runs home.

The Leopards’ best scoring chance came in the sixth inning when sophomore first baseman and pitcher Megan Coyle led off with a double, but the Mountain Hawks struck out three consecutive Leopards, stranding Coyle on the basepath.

The final game on Sunday played out in a similar fashion, with Lehigh scoring five runs over the third and fourth innings on the way to a 7-1 win.

This weekend, Lafayette will host nationally-ranked Boston University (41-4-1 overall, 12-0 Patriot League) in a three-game series, with Senior Day celebrations being held on Sunday.

Five members of the softball team did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
