This week is all about raising awareness for fake songs. What’s more fake than a cover? Are they even real? Nonetheless, the following covers are songs we hold near and dear to our hearts. Moral of the story, we are FAKE and we like covers.

Emma: Okay, this week was really difficult for me to pick just one song. A lot of the covers on this playlist are not only unbelievable, but are also some of my favorite songs of all time. So, some quick shout-outs to the runner ups from this week: Van Morrison’s “Comfortably Numb,” Hozier’s “Sweet Thing,” and Lambchop’s “Six O’Clock News.” Even though I love all of these songs, my top pick for this week has to be Johnny Cash’s “Hurt.” Cash takes the Nine Inch Nail original in a totally different direction. His warbling, deep and gritty voice layer the building chords, and his take on this song never ceases to amaze me. It’s not exactly an uplifting song, though, so definitely emotionally prepare before listening.

Shelby: My pick this week is “Sound of Silence” by Disturbed. Many of my friends judge me for listening to this song because of its screamo-esque vibe. However, it is a great cover for many reasons. Originally sung by the famous American music duo Simon and Garfunkel, Disturbed makes their version unique by incorporating heavy metal elements to the 70’s pop song. Through powerful and deep vocals, Disturbed creates an emotional experience that brings a sense of personal pain and anger. Its raw emotion and level of intensity is unparalleled.
