The Lafayette has received complaints regarding its reporting last week on a pro-Palestine protest on campus. After an internal review, The Lafayette acknowledges that the article over-emphasized the perspective of tour guides and the administration, thereby affecting how the protest was represented, but was otherwise accurate. The Lafayette stands by its reporting.
The Lafayette reviewed interview transcripts and found that none were altered or taken out of context. Tour guides did say they felt intimidated by the protestors and that protestors followed some tours. Representatives for the protest group, Pards 4 Palestine, refused to answer specific questions when reached for comment, opting instead to release a group statement (The Lafayette denied a request to accept an “anonymous” statement from the group).
That said, the article did lack some context. While the article did mention that Pards 4 Palestine intended to disrupt EarthFest, it did not mention that students at EarthFest largely appeared unaffected by the protest, with some apparently ignoring the protestors by looking down at their phones. Protestors also marched to the office of college President Nicole Hurd in Markle Hall, a detail that, regrettably, was not included in the article.
