The Lafayette

First tournament in the books

For Coach Terri Dadio Campbell and Lafayette women’s volleyball, the theme was simple: serve and serve-receive, playing within yourself and being in control. That was just the case in its opening tournament of the season. Lafayette traveled to La Salle last weekend and won two of three, losing to Sacramento State before winning two straight against La Salle and Fairleigh Dickinson.

With the solid start, the team took its first steps towards erasing the demons of late last season’s nine straight losses. Campbell and her staff rotated different lineups throughout the weekend to learn which groups worked best together. Sophomore outside hitter Brianne Giangiobbe made strides throughout the weekend and was named to the La Salle All-Tournament Team. Giangiobbe filled the stat sheet with a bit of everything – 17 kills, nine digs and three blocks.

“We had good leadership from our seniors and our freshmen stepped up and gave us positive contributions,” Campbell said. Senior captain Karissa Ciliento was the face backing up Campbell’s words, notching a team high 18 kills, including a match winner.

The recently renovated Kirby Sports Center will host its first tournament this weekend and Lafayette looks to break in its new home with victories against Wright State, Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Peter’s.

“Our focus for this week is serve-receive, blocking and team defense,” Campbell said. “We don’t know much about our opponents so all we can do is continue to get better as a team.”

These next few games will be critical for the Leopards with Patriot League play looming in the distance.
