On July 13 the Lafayette family lost a great coach in William Lawson, the winningest coach in Lafayette history. During an interview with GoLeopards.com, Lafayette director of athletics Bruce McCutcheon said, “Family was at the very heart of Bill’s being and he was the most positive person I knew. No matter the kind of day you were having, Bill’s very presence put a smile on your face.”

Lawson joined the Lafayette coaching staff in 1965 as the head coach of the swim team and he tennis teams, then joined the lacrosse coaching staff in 1972.

After 37 years and three different head coaching jobs, he retired in 2002. In the same year, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame. As McCutcheon put it, “He will be sorely missed.”
