The Lafayette

A new chapter

With disappointment from last season on its mind, the Lafayette men’s tennis team turned over a new leaf with a successful road trip last weekend. The team participated in the Villanova Invitational and was 12-8 in 20 matches of singles and doubles combined.

Sophomores Brian Pinkard and Chris Matturi led the team with two double matches victories. The duo first defeated a team from Chestnut Hill University on Friday before defeating a doubles team from Robert Morris University on Sunday. Their victory over Robert Morris’ duo came after both of them won singles matches earlier in the day.

“Everyone that played had some good wins and our losses were hard fought,” Pinkard said. “The team did well at pulling out winnable matches, even if that meant having to grind it out a bit.”

T.J. Morgan ‘17 won his first collegiate match of his career defeating a singles player from Villanova University 6-4, 6-4.

“T.J. has a solid game that will allow him to be very competitive in our league this year, and he is a welcomed addition the team,” Pinkard said. “He doesn’t have a problem going for his shots, and he should be an asset for us in the future.”

The Lafayette women’s tennis team starts its season on next Friday at the St. Joseph’s Invitational in Philadelphia. Seniors Lucy Bass and Liza Blank serve as captains.
