Lafayette scored the last five points of regulation to send its game against Princeton into overtime, but lost 81-80 on Wednesday night.

The Leopards (0-3) had one final chance when guard Nick Linder stole an inbounds pass with two seconds remaining, but the freshman could not get off a shot in time.

Juniors Seth Hinrichs and Dan Trist led the way offensively for Lafayette, scoring 27 and 19 points respectively. Trist added nine rebounds.

Hinrichs was particularly effective, shooting eight of 11 from the field and nine of ten from the free throw line.

The Lafayette offense often times ran through the post.

“We obviously want to go through Dan,” Hinrichs said. “A lot of nights, we think he has a mismatch in the post. We just give him the ball and let him go to work.”

Lafayette shot 58 percent from the field while the Tigers shot 45 percent, but the real difference came down to three-pointers.

Princeton (2-1) converted 12 of 26 three-point attempts while Lafayette attempted just 11 shots from beyond the arc and made six.

Trailing by five after halftime, the Tigers used a 26-11 run to catapult itself into the lead.

“We had a little lapse there in the second half,” Hinrichs said. “The offense wasn’t flowing well. Defensively, we just had some miscommunication.”

Part of that offensive lapse was the increased focus Princeton put on Trist.

“They just made adjustments,” Trist said. “They changed up what they were doing on me a little bit.”

Senior Will Barrett paced Princeton with 22 points including four three-pointers. Barrett scored seven points in the overtime period.

The Leopards remain winless but travel to play the New Jersey Institute of Technology tomorrow at 2:o0pm.
