Sept. 7 @ Monmouth University

L, 24-21

Freshman quarterback Keegan Shoemaker made his first career start, throwing for 256 yards on 20-32 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. Shoemaker earned Patriot League Football Rookie of the Week honors for his efforts against Monmouth. Senior wide receiver Nick Pearson had six receptions for 118 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown catch that was the longest of his career.

Golf 

Sept. 7-8 @ Alex Lagowitz Invitational

The Leopards finished in a tie for fifth place in the 18-team bracket, and were second among Patriot League teams behind Bucknell University. Sophomore Ryan Tall placed T-2 individually, shooting a 215 through three rounds, and was named the Patriot League Men’s Golfer of the Week.

Men’s Soccer (3-0-1) (0-0)

Sept. 7 @ St. Francis College Brooklyn

T, 0-0

Lafayette outshot the Terriers 15-13 and held a slight edge in shots on goal, 6-5. Junior defender Andrew Venezia was ejected after receiving a red card in the 35th minute, causing the Leopards to play a man down for the remainder of the game. Sophomore goalie Alex Sutton made five saves for his third shutout of the season.

Sept. 10 vs. Monmouth

W, 5-2

Senior forward James Gibson scored the lone goal for the Leopards in the first half before sophomore forward Marcos Kitromilides and senior midfielder Ryan Goncalves each netted goals early in the second half to put Lafayette up 3-2. Sophomore midfielder Sebastian Varela put the game away with two late goals, and now leads the team in points with six.

Men’s Tennis

Sept. 6-7 @ Siena Invitational

Sophomore Will Barry won both of his matches to secure the victory in the men’s “A” flight. Freshmen Ryan Thompson and Nash Lovallo won two matches apiece in their first collegiate tournament.

Women’s Tennis 

Sept. 6-7 @ Siena Invitational

Sophomore Maureen McCormack won the women’s “B” flight after going undefeated in her four matches, while senior Grace Conrad went 3-1 over the weekend and won the back draw bracket in the women’s “B” flight. Junior Alexa Cooke competed in the women’s “C” flight and notched a 2-1 record, and classmate Samantha Snyder went 2-1 in the women’s “A” flight.

Field Hockey (1-3) (0-0)

Sept. 6 @ Appalachian State University

L, 3-2

Senior forward Sam Di Maio and freshman forward Felicitas Hannes each scored goals before Appalachian State scored the game-winner late in the fourth period. Both teams had 13 shots and five corners, and senior goalkeeper Sarah Park made four saves in a complete-game effort.

Sept. 8 @ (#20) Liberty University

L, 5-0

The Leopards were outshot 20-7 with the nationally-ranked Lady Flames holding a 14-1 edge in shots on goal. Hannes put the only shot on goal for Lafayette, while junior midfielder Audrey Sawers recorded a team-high four shots. Park made a season-high nine saves between the pipes.

Women’s Soccer (3-3-1) (0-0) 

Sept. 6 @ Delaware State University

W, 3-0

The Leopards outshot the Hornets 17-3 and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior midfielder Sophie Saldivar scored twice to pace the offense, while classmate Camryn Monfort notched two assists, one to Saldivar and one to junior forward Krista Kissell who also scored in the game.

Sept. 8 @ (#15) Georgetown University

L, 4-1

Sophomore midfielder Riley Dowd scored her first career goal in the 88th minute but it was too little, too late for the Leopards. The Hoyas had 17 corner kicks compared to Lafayette’s one, and outshot the visitors 24-6.

Sept. 11 @ Saint Peter’s University

W, 6-0

The Leopards exploded for six goals in the game, their most in a contest in over 17 years. Junior forward Krista Kissell and sophomore forward Katie Butler each scored a pair of goals, as Lafayette outshot Saint Peter’s 25-3. Pohl and Neumann combined for three saves, while junior forward Rebecca Schreiner and sophomore midfielder Sophia Hudson each scored a goal.

Volleyball (3-5) (0-0)

Sept. 6 vs. Delaware State, Manhattan College

W, 3-1; L, 3-1

Against Delaware State, the Leopards won the third and fourth sets 27-25 to earn their first win of the season and the first for new head coach Ryan Adams. Sophomore outside hitter Leanna Deegan led the team with 12 kills, while fellow outside hitters senior Katrina Ruggiero and sophomore Grace Tulevech had 11 apiece.

Against Manhattan, Tulevech recorded 13 kills, Deegan had 9, and freshman outside hitter Ellie Carrera-Justiz finished with 12 kills. Senior setter Julia Howard tallied 23 assists and a pair of aces, while freshman outside hitter Grace Steurer had 12 digs.

Sept. 7 vs. University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES)

L, 3-1; W, 3-1

Against UPenn, the Leopards won the first set 29-27 but lost the next three to the Quakers. Carrera-Justiz led the team with 14 kills and 12 digs, and junior setter Jenna Bailey dished out 19 assists.

Against UMES, Lafayette won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-19 before dropping the third set by two points. A back-and-forth final set ended with a close 25-23 win for the Leopards. Deegan, Ruggiero and Tulevech notched 11, 10 and nine kills, respectively.

Sept. 11 @ Fairleigh Dickinson University

W, 3-1

Deegan led the team with 15 kills, Tulevech had 13 and Carrera-Justiz recorded 11 in the Leopards’ third win of the season. Lafayette hit nine aces, compared to just one for the Knights, and had over twice the number of assists, 54-25.
