The Lafayette

Letter from the Editor: 8/29/14

Last year, I was presented with the opportunity of becoming the editor-in-chief of The Lafayette. It was enticing, but extremely daunting–I was just finishing up my sophomore year, coming off of months as News Editor, where my responsibilities were still important but not as broad. I accepted wholeheartedly; the opportunity excited me, and I was ready to take it on.

Over the summer I thought a lot about what I wanted to do as editor. I wanted to honor the standards set by those who have spent their entire Wednesday night in the newsroom before me, while also adding a different touch. I thought about what the newspaper can do to keep up with a changing media landscape, what experience the people on the paper should be getting, and how to get those things done with the help of a group of people who volunteer an insane amount of their time at college working on this paper.

Over the next couple of months, readers will begin to see a lot of changes, both in print and online, the first one of those being a new site at the same location, https://www.lafayettestudentnews.com. I am more than proud of the site, and I think it’s a great first step to the things we’re going to do this semester. As an effort to make the site cleaner, we have deleted posts dating back to over a year ago – readers wanting to access those articles can do so through our Archives.

At the same time, I’m still dedicated to bringing you the great journalism that comes from a devoted group of people like the staff at The Lafayette. A lot of our staff, including myself, are filling new roles this year and trying to find their footing–I have no doubt in our abilities to do better this year than we have before.

This is going to be a long process. I hope you join us on the ride.
